The "bauma" is the largest and most important leading trade fair in the field of construction machinery. This trade fair is also subject to a three-year rhythm and is organised by the "New Munich Trade Fair Centre" on the former Munich-Riem airport site. Until 1995, exhibitions were held centrally in Munich on the Theresienwiese, then in 1998 for the first time on the new exhibition grounds in Riem. The exhibition area is regularly enlarged and today extends far beyond the original exhibition grounds. All manufacturers develop and show new products at and for "bauma", because the proportion of international visitors and exhibitors is simply disproportionately high and so potential customers from overseas can also be addressed, who are otherwise not so easily reached.

The fair covers the entire hall area and the outdoor area. Suppliers are mainly to be found in the halls, while construction machinery manufacturers always set up a new trade fair city in the outdoor area for the fair.
